Music therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program. Music Therapy is an established health profession in which music is used within a therapeutic relationship to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of individuals.

Adapted piano lessons are typically taught by board-certified music therapists experienced in working with people who have special needs. Therapists use adapted material and/or approaches to ensure success in music education. Lessons may be structured with recurring schedules and are typically slower-paced than traditional lessons. They are taught with the primary goal of musical skill development for personal satisfaction and/or to improve emotional, social, and/or physical needs.
